Chinese exports to us

Trade between China and the United States has been an area of rapid growth in recent years. While the relationship between the two countries has strengthened, tighter import/export regulations have been imposed by each country's government. The People's Republic of China is the world's largest manufacturing country and the largest exporter to the United States. If you own a business that needs to export from China to the United States, you will have to comply with all import/export laws required by both the Chinese and American governments.

Instructions

1.       Define the commodity that you will be exporting. Use the United States Internal Trade Commission website to look up your Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS) number. Describe your goods, as well as the quantity and the value. Write down all information regarding the use of the goods, the value, and the end user. Prepare the commercial invoice using this information.

2.       Go to the Ministry of Commerce of the People's Republic of China (MOFCOM) official website and register to obtain a certificate for general import and export activities. Use the link on the website to submit an application.

3.       Obtain an export license if your commodity is considered a regulated good (sensitive equipment or technology). Consult the MOFCOM website to determine if your goods require a license. If so, use the website to apply. You must have an import/export registration, a domestic business registration and a clean record of transactions to receive an export license. You should receive your export license within 45 days.

4.       Contact a local freight forwarder. A freight forwarder is a company that handles the logistics of moving freight internationally. You may find a local freight forwarder using a directory such as business.com. Contact several companies to request a quote. Tell the company the port to which you would like your goods delivered and when you would like them to arrive. You should receive quotes by e-mail or over the phone within a few days. Compare the prices offered in the quotes, as well as the history and reputation of the company, before making a decision.

5.       Place an order with your chosen freight forwarding company. Provide the required shipping documents, including the export license, commercial invoice and packing list. Your freight forwarder will prepare any additional documents needed to clear customs after the shipment arrives to the United States. Your freight forwarder will keep you updated on the progress of your shipment.
